Fire Restrictions

Wildfire

As wild fire danger increases in the park, please observe the following year-round fire restrictions:

  • Within the park, fires are only allowed in designated campgrounds and may only be ignited in grills or designated fire rings
  • If you are hiking and camping below the rim, cook stoves may be used, but campfires and other open fires are never allowed
  • If you are on a river trip, campfires are only allowed in elevated metal pans, and use of a fire proof blanket under the pan is required

Shoshone Prescribed Fire

Prescribed fire

National Park Service (NPS) fire managers successfully treated 994 acres with prescribed (Rx) fire on the South Rim of Grand Canyon. North Rim Prescribed Fires Completed

Grand Canyon, Ariz. - North Zone Interagency Fire Managers have completed ignitions on both the Range and Thompson Prescribed Fires (Rx). Approximately 2,300 acres were treated in the Range burn unit and approximately 3,800 acres were treated in the Thompson unit. Fire managers employed both hand and aerial ignitions in both units.

Trail and Road Closures due to Prescribed Fires on North Rim

Grand Canyon, Ariz. - North Zone Interagency Fire Managers have completed ignitions on the Range prescribed fire (Rx) unit. Approximately 2,300 acres have been treated. This prescribed fire has helped reduce the build-up of dead and down vegetation on the forest floor, reducing the risk of extreme fire behavior along Highway 67, the North Rim's primary egress route, and protecting and enhancing Mexican spotted owl habitat. Update on North Rim Prescribed Fires

Grand Canyon, Ariz. - North Zone Interagency Fire Managers have treated approximately 1,700 acres of the Range prescribed fire (Rx) unit since ignitions began on Saturday, October 27. Fire managers plan to continue ignitions today and tomorrow if environmental conditions remain favorable. Approximately 2,300 total acres may be treated. This prescribed fire is helping to reduce the build-up of dead and down vegetation on the forest floor, reducing the risk of extreme fire behavior along the North Rim's primary egress route, and protecting and enhancing Mexican spotted owl habitat. North Rim Prescribed Fires

Grand Canyon, Ariz. - North Zone Interagency Fire Managers currently anticipate initiating the Range Prescribed Fire (Range Rx) on Saturday, October 27. If conditions are favorable, fire managers plan to begin both hand and aerial ignitions before noon. Fire Managers Are Making Plans for Two Prescribed Fires on Grand Canyon’s North Rim

Grand Canyon, Ariz. - National Park Service (NPS) and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) fire managers, working together as the North Zone Interagency Fire Management Program, are making plans for the Range and Thompson Prescribed Fires on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Fire managers anticipate initiating these prescribed fire treatments within the next four weeks as weather and fuel moisture conditions allow.
